A scaled-down Shamrock Invite takes on a different format this year, as the timed finals meet will see a total of six sessions over three days. The men swam morning and afternoon sessions yesterday, then wrapped up with a morning session today, and then women will swim this afternoon and tomorrow. Instead of the normal bevy of teams, this iteration of the annual invite featured only the hosts Notre Dame and Missouri State on the men’s side, with the Fighting Irish completing a clean sweep and winning 268-86. Top seed Katie Ledecky , a Stanford postgrad, is out for the final day of competition. Ledecky, who won the 1500 free, 400 free, and 200 free here, has scratched the 800 free. At this meet, Ledecky swam her 4th fastest 200 free ever with a 1:54.59. She raced to a 3:59.66 in the 400 free and a 15:29.51 in the mile. Her mile time was the 5th fastest performance in history.

Cal’s Abbey Weitzeil has already been having a historic season. She became the first woman to ever break 21 seconds in the 50 free, setting the American Record at a 20.90 in December. Weitzeil looks primed for more historic performances this championship season.

Daniel Hunter broke his own New Zealand Open Record in the 50 free. Erika Fairweather was within a development consideration time to qualify for World Championships and is a New Zealand 15 Years Age Record. Brad Ashby qualified for World Championships in the Men’s 200m IM. Taiko Torepe-Ormsby broke the New Zealand 15 years Age Record in the 50 back. Ciara Smith broke the New Zealand 18 Years Age Record in the Women’s 200m breast.

Upsets have always been a blast to watch no matter what sport they occur in. Watching leads erased and world records broken always makes for an exciting time, but if they’re done by a performer that no one expects, those races become legendary.
