On Sunday in Wisconsin, 15-year-old Maggie Papanicholas won the girl’s 100 breast (1:02.02), within three-fourths of a second of her lifetime best from the Wisconsin 18&Under Championships . That best time ranked her 1st going into finals (contested in long course meters) where she snagged 2nd place behind Lucy Thomas and missed the Olympic Trial qualifying time by .05. It’s the fourth and final day of the 2021 Pro Swim Series kick-off, with prelims of the 200 IM, 100 free and 200 back slated for this morning. TIDE Swimming’s Samantha Tadder led prelims this morning in the women’s 200 IM, going 2:18.09. Breaststroke standouts Emily Escobedo and Miranda Tucker both joined her under 2:19, going 2:18.77 and 2:18.91, respectively. There was no Zoe Dixon , the 400 IM champion Friday night, as she’s focused on the 200 back today. After a 53.3 100m back last night that was the fastest time in both Richmond and San Antonio, Justin Ress will tackle the 100 free today.

La Salle University head swimming and diving coach Jamie Platt announced his resignation on Monday, after accepting the position of executive director at Middle Atlantic Swimming. 24-year-old Arno Kamminga from the Netherlands has been on fire all-year long as he was expected to be a key player among the medalists in the 100 & 200 breaststroke at the Tokyo Olympic Games that were set to take place two weeks from now. But with the Olympics being move back a year, that gives every swimmer a chance to reset before chasing their Olympic dreams in 2021. Kamminga has showed no ill effects from the COVID-19 pandemic that has hindered so many athletes around the world.

The Corona Race competition between the Netherlands and Belgium took place today in Antwerp, giving athletes a chance to spread their aquatic wings after having been training amidst the coronavirus pandemic. Unique to this match-up was the fact that there was no electronic timing, with swimmer’s outcomes validated via hand-controlled stopwatches only. With that in mind, several performances were eye-catching by themselves, but especially in light of the fact that swimmers have only been back in the water for handfuls of weeks.

Adam Peaty swam a time only he has bettered with a 100m breaststroke blast of 58.13 at the Edinburgh International Swim Meet. Now that the British Olympic trials are likely to be postponed in the light of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the meet at the Royal Commonwealth Pool may well be the final time many of these swimmers will be in competition for a while.
