Jaka Pušnik from the Slovenian capital of Ljubljana has announced his verbal commitment to Florida State University for 2022-23. Born in 2003, Pusnik swims for PK Olimpija Ljubljana and represents Slovenia in international competition. Last summer he was a finalist in the 200 free at the European Youth Olympic Festival in Baku. He finished 8th with 1:53.76. Since then he has dropped 2.1 seconds in the 200, his strongest event. He also competed in the 400 free and 200 back.

Lithuanian backstroker Arijus Pavlidi has verbally committed to Florida State’s class of 2025. I’m super excited to announce my verbal commitment to Florida State University! I believe that FSU will be the perfect fit for me to continue my academic and athletic journey. I can’t wait to be part of something greater and see what heights I can reach with FSU! GO NOLES! At the 2019 European Junior Championships last summer, Pavlidi just missed the podium with a fourth-place effort in the 200 back (1:59.82). He was also ninth in the 100 back (55.90) and 13th in the 50 back (26.37).

Jeremy Kipp has added one more name to the newly-constructed swimming & diving coaching staff at USC, and it’s a big one in Pac-12 circles. Lea Maurer has been named the program’s new associate head coach. Maurer, a 1992 Olympic gold and bronze medalist and 1998 World Champion, was the head coach of the women’s program at Stanford from 2005 through 2012. During her time there, she led the program to 7 consecutive top 5 finishes at the NCAA Championships and back-to-back Pac-10 titles in 2010 and 2011. Pavlidi last competed at the Lithuanian Open Championships in December where he recorded five best times and finaled in four events. He raced three events at the LEN European Short Course Championships last winter and won two events at the Lithuanian Junior Championships in 2019.

Florida State University has announced reductions in 25 full-time positions and pay reductions for most of its athletics staff as part of a 20% reduction in the department’s athletics budget for next year. This comes as universities across the country grapple with the economic fallout of the coronavirus pandemic that threatens the future of college athletics. The department says that there is a “strong possibility” of furloughs to further reduce costs.

The University of Florida has recently gained a big verbal commitment for the fall of 2021 from Ekaterina Nikonova of Novosibirsk, Russia. She will join Olivia Peoples , Anna Auld , Mary Kate Kelley , Micayla Cronk , Brooke Zettel , and Georgia Bates in Gainesville as a member of the class of 2025. Regarding her commitment, she said: Nikonova is a talented sprint freestyler who represents the Russian Swimming Federation internationally.

Coleman Stewart of NC State and Virginia’s Paige Madden were named the ACC men’s and women’s swimmer of the year, respectively, in Friday’s list of postseason honorees . Full list of honorees: Madden led a parade of Virginia winners, with Kate Douglass claiming women’s freshman of the year and Todd DeSorbo earning women’s swim coach of the year. Paige Madden won the 200, 500 and 1,650 freestyle at the ACC championships to earn ACC Swimmer of the Meet honors . She was ranked in the top eight in all three events on the NCAA psych sheets, before the event was cancelled due to the corona ...

Coleman Stewart of North Carolina State and Paige Madden of Virginia have been named the ACC Swimmers of the Year for the truncated 2019-2020 season. The awards mirrored those handed out for Most Valuable Swimmer at the ACC Championship meets. Stewart, a senior, ended the season as the country’s top swimmer in the 100 backstroke thanks to his ACC Record of 44.04 done at the ACC Championship meet. The University of Florida’s home O’Connell Center Pool is being renamed the Anne Marie Rogers Swimming and Diving Pool after a $1 million gift to Florida athletics from swimming alum Veronica Meinhard and her wife Kristina M. Johnson . Rogers, who served as the school’s associate athletics director from 1985-2003, is regarded as a “trailblazer” for UF’s women’s athletic programs, according to the school’s announcement. Jenny Bird , a junior at Creekside High School in Saint Johns, Florida, has verbally committed to swim at Florida State University beginning in the fall of 2021. She will join fellow class of 2025 verbal commits Alexandra Dicks , Ella Dyjak , Madeline Huggins , and Rachel Moran. Bird swam the 100 back (3rd place) and 100 fly (4th) place at the Florida High School Class 4A Championships in November, notching lifetime bests in both events in prelims. In club swimming, where she represents Loggerhead Aquatics, Bird competed at Winter Juniors East in the 100 back and 100 fly.

Ella Dyjak , a junior at Waterford High School and a member of the Connecticut Aquatic Club, has made a verbal commitment to swim for Florida State University in the fall of 2021. Primarily a distance swimmer, Dyjak’s career-best time in the 1,650-yard freestyle would have been the third-fastest time on this year’s Seminole squad. The Seminoles also have five women between 4:51 and 4:54 in the 500-yard freestyle; Dyjak currently has a best time of a 4:56. At the 2020 Connecticut Swimming Senior Championships, Dyjak was a two-event champion in the 1,000 and 1,650-yard freestyle.

The Creighton Prep boys swam to victory at the Nebraska Boys’ High School State Championships. Senior Rush Clark raced to a new Meet Record in prelims of the 100 fly, setting a lifetime best 47.21. He went on to win the final in 47.74. Clark, an FSU commit, put up a lifetime best 49.11 in the 100 back prelims. He won that race as well with a 49.54.
