SWIMMING WORLD NEWS
Jan. 19, 2021 — TYR Pro Swim Series: What We Learned From the First Prelims/Finals Meet of the Year Usually a prelims/finals meet in mid-January would be another ho-hum competition in the leadup to the Olympic Trials. But this past weekend’s Pro Swim Series in San Antonio and Richmond was a welcomed sight for swim fans due to the fact it was the first legitimate prelims/finals meet in a long-course venue since March 2020, a week before the COVID-19 pandemic took hold of the United States. USA Swimming held the U.S. Open across nine different sites in late November, but the meet was timed finals only ...

Ally McHugh Talks Racing all Stroke 200s, Taking Mile Out Fast (Video)
SWIMSWAM
Jan. 19, 2021 — It took almost the entire race, but Ally McHugh finally managed to pull away from Haley Anderson around the 1250 mark of the women’s mile, ultimately winning by two and a half seconds in 16:12.87. The two went stroke-for-stroke for a good chunk of the event, including flipping within a few one-hundredths of each other several times around the midway mark. McHugh also negative split her swim, turning in 8:06.74 at the 750 before closing in 8:06.13. This is the 23-year-old’s third-fastest swim ever, and quickest since August of 2019. It also makes McHugh the second-fastest American in ...

The 29 Confessions of a Distance Swimmer
SWIMMING WORLD NEWS
July 16, 2020 — The 29 Confessions of a Distance Swimmer By Chandler Brandes, Swimming World College Intern “I didn’t choose the distance life. The distance life chose me.” Well, not quite. Distance swimmers are all born the same way: we swam the 500 for the first time around age nine or 10 and didn’t do too badly, so our coaches put us in it again at the next meet. Then again. And again. And before we knew it, we were swimming the 1000. Then the dreaded day came when we had to swim the 1650. And here we are, many years later, still staring at the bottom of the pool, anxiously waiting for the red bl ...

Ian Thorpe: “Everyone in the World is Swimming the 200 Freestyle Wrong” (Video)
SWIMMING WORLD NEWS
Jan. 20, 2021 — Australian Swimming legend Ian Thorpe believes that his sensational 1:44.06 World record over 200 metres freestyle in 2001 remains one off the three most competitive four-length swims of the past two decades because “everyone in the world is swimming the 200 freestyle wrong.” “You can’t swim 150 meters easy and then turn it into a sprint. You are going to limit what time you are going to do,” says Thorpe, Olympic 400m freestyle champion at Sydney 2000 and 200m and 400m gold medallist at Athens 2004. SWIMSWAM
Jan. 19, 2021 — The men’s 1500 freestyle was a mirror image of the women’s event, this time featuring Zane Grothe and Will Gallant . The main difference was that Grothe made his move a little bit earlier than McHugh, pulling away from Gallant around the 1000m mark. Grothe, 28, finished in a time of 15:10.29, stacking up as his fastest swim since July of 2019 while also making him the second-fastest American this season. The time is a marked improvement compared to his 1500 done at this time last year in Richmond (15:19.77). Also like McHugh, Grothe negative split the event, going 7:36.23/7:34.06 for ...
