Tonight is the last finals session of the 2021 January Pro Swim Series in Richmond. The timed finals of the men’s and women’s 1500 free, followed by the finals of the men’s and women’s 200 IM, 200 back, and 100 free will be contested this evening. After topping the women’s 400 free both here in Richmond and in the overall PSS results, 31-year-old veteran Ashley Twichell of TAC Titans will be featured in the women’s 1500 free timed finals. It’s the fourth and final day of the 2021 Pro Swim Series kick-off, with prelims of the 200 IM, 100 free and 200 back slated for this morning. TIDE Swimming’s Samantha Tadder led prelims this morning in the women’s 200 IM, going 2:18.09. Breaststroke standouts Emily Escobedo and Miranda Tucker both joined her under 2:19, going 2:18.77 and 2:18.91, respectively. There was no Zoe Dixon , the 400 IM champion Friday night, as she’s focused on the 200 back today. After a 53.3 100m back last night that was the fastest time in both Richmond and San Antonio, Justin Ress will tackle the 100 free today.

I sat down with world champion Michael Chadwick and spoke with him about how he’s handling staying indoors with very limited swim training. Chadwick emphasized that it feels like life has slowed down a bit, and with it he’s trying to take the time to do what he can. The Toronto Titans signing spree continues, with American sprinter Blake Pieroni and Icelandic Olympian Anton Sveinn McKee joining the roster of the newest International Swimming League franchise Friday. Pieroni, 24, won a gold medal with the American 400 free relay at the Rio Olympics and a bronze in the 800 free relay at the 2019 World Championships. The Indiana University grad has 12 relay medals in World Championships (Long- and Short-Course), seven of them gold. The Toronto Titans, the newest International Swimming League franchise , have added their second and third signings in Canadian Kayla Sanchez and American Michael Chadwick. Sanchez, a native of Scarborough, Ontario, competed for Energy Standard last year . She was part of Canada’s stellar 2017 World Junior Championships squad, winning five medals and three golds and setting two World Junior records. Sanchez swam legs on two Canadian bronze-medal winning relays at the 2019 World Championships.

Regan Smith will get another chance to show what she’s got in Saturday night’s final day of the TYR Pro Swim Series stop in Des Moines. She enters the evening as the top seed in the 100 backstroke, an event where she holds the world record, after a morning swim of 58.79 seconds. The second seed is Olivia Smoliga in 59.60 with Kathleen Baker also under a minute in the morning prelims.

The final prelims session of the 2020 Pro Swim Series in Des Moines will feature the 100 back, 200 breast, 200 IM, and 50 free. After winning both the 200 back and taking 2nd in the 100 fly on Friday, Regan Smith will cap off her Des Moines campaign with her top seed in the 100 back.

In addition to the regular racing on Friday at the Pro Swim Series – Des Moines, there was a series of afternoon time trials. In fact, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at this meet all have time trials sessions, and we’re seeing bigger names show up for them than what usually happens at these Pro Swim Series meets. That includes a pair of US National Teamers and a Canadian Olympian in the 100 freestyles.
