Swimming Canada announced the nomination of six swimmers to its 2021 Olympic team on Friday, along with a shift in both the dates and format of the upcoming Olympic Trials. The Trials will now move to May 24-28, and an invitational meet will follow June 21-23, with Olympic nominations to be made after both events. Individual 2019 World Championship medalists Kylie Masse , Maggie MacNeil and Sydney Pickrem have been nominated by Swimming Canada to the Canadian Olympic team, as have Penny Oleksiak , Taylor Ruck and Markus Thormeyer , all of whom made an individual final in Gwangju. Fear of the unknown was holding Markus Thormeyer back in the pool. When the Canadian swimmer told teammates he was gay, the walls he'd built up came down and Thormeyer felt liberated to swim fast.

As previously reported , Swimming Canada will be running a reduced capacity Olympic Trials with 20 swimmers for each event swimming in a timed finals format. The Trials will run from April 7-11, 2021 in Toronto. Following a preliminary list of Canada’s top 30 swimmers in each event , invites have now been sent to the top 20 swimmers in each event. As per the invite, swimmers will have until January 15 th to accept their invitation to the meet. In addition to the regular racing on Friday at the Pro Swim Series – Des Moines, there was a series of afternoon time trials. In fact, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at this meet all have time trials sessions, and we’re seeing bigger names show up for them than what usually happens at these Pro Swim Series meets. That includes a pair of US National Teamers and a Canadian Olympian in the 100 freestyles.
