The annual Flanders Swimming Cup has transitioned into the Flanders Qualification Meet for this 2021 calendar year. Set for Antwerp, Belgium on Saturday, January 23rd, and Sunday, January 24th, this Flanders Qualification meet will serve as a FINA-sanctioned qualification meet for the postponed 2020 Olympic Games. The event is open for domestic swimmers able to train during the current coronavirus lockdown, as well as visiting foreign swimmers. Two-time European Short Course champion Kira Toussaint of the Netherlands took down the Geneva International Meet record in the women’s 100m backstroke to close out the 3-day meet. The 26-year-old first produced a morning swim of 1:00.50 to take the top seed, overwriting the meet record of 1:01.32 Carlotta Zavkova put on the books back in 2018. Then in tonight’s final, Toussaint touched in a super solid 59.85 to reap the top prize in the only sub-minute time of the field. 24-year-old Arno Kamminga from the Netherlands has been on fire all-year long as he was expected to be a key player among the medalists in the 100 & 200 breaststroke at the Tokyo Olympic Games that were set to take place two weeks from now. But with the Olympics being move back a year, that gives every swimmer a chance to reset before chasing their Olympic dreams in 2021. Kamminga has showed no ill effects from the COVID-19 pandemic that has hindered so many athletes around the world.
