SWIMMING WORLD NEWS
April 1, 2020— The German Swim Federation (DSV) has joined Swimming Canada in urging FINA , the international federation, to shunt the 2021 World Swimming Championships into 2022 to take account of the move of dates for the Olympic Games due to the coronavirus pandemic. The global swimming showcase was scheduled for Fukuoka, Japan, from July 16 to August 1, 2021 but the Tokyo 2020 Olympics will now be staged from July 23-August 8. After Swimming Canada led the way in calling for FINA to shift its big events to 2022, Germany became the first European nation to follow through and reflect the growing ...

SWIMMING WORLD NEWS
April 1, 2020— The prospect of the 2021 World Championships being moved back a year to 2022 appears to be a step closer with world governing body FINA being forced to act following the rescheduling of Tokyo 2020 . The IOC announced on Monday the Olympic Games would take place from 23 July to 8 August 2021, a year later than planned after the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic forced their postponement. That has impacted on the World Championships, which are scheduled to take place in Fukuoka, Japan , from 16 July to 1 August 2021. ‘Prioritise The Olympics, the Only Competition That Matters’ Says Swim Elder Sweetenham
SWIMMING WORLD NEWS
March 30, 2020— Bill Sweetenham , one of the elders of world swimming, has urged coaches and swimmers to “prioritise the Olympics first and foremost” now the dates of Tokyo 2020 have been set for 2021, “as historically no-one, but no-one, recognises or remembers any other result or competition”. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) today named July 23-August 8, 2021 as the news dates of Tokyo 2020, the Games that will continue to be branded with the dateline of this year. That means the Games will end on the day they started in Beijing in 2008, when 08/08/08 was chosen as a lucky symbol for the ...

Open Water Olympic Qualifiers from 2019 Worlds Will Remain Qualified for Tokyo
SWIMSWAM
March 28, 2020— The International Olympic Committee has confirmed that athletes already qualified “by name” for the 2020 Olympics will remain qualified for the postponed Games, NBC Sports’ Nick Zaccardi reported Saturday . The IOC had said Thursday that athletes who had already qualified would get to keep their spots — but many of those spots are controlled by national Olympic committees, rather than the international organization, so that news was somewhat unclear. What this ruling definitely applies to now is open water swimmers who qualified out of the 10K race at the 2019 FINA World Championship ...
