The postponement of the 2020 Olympic Games has affected virtually everyone across major sport, with athletes reacting to the change in plans with emotions ranging from sadness to relief to re-energized conviction. The Japanese – known as the ‘Frog King’ – won the 100 and 200m breaststroke at Athens 2004 before a successful defence four years later in Beijing saw him write his own entry in the record books. That record of being the only male breaststroker to have retained an Olympic title – and the sole swimmer, man or woman, to have defended the 100m gold ...

We reported yesterday how the remaining elite international swimming event of the Japan Swim was officially been cancelled in light of the still-present coronavirus (COVID-19) threat worldwide. The catalyst for cancellation of the event originally slated for April 2nd – April 7th was the press conference held yesterday by Governor Yuriko Koike . Koike called on Tokyo residents to exercise restraint to avoid a lockdown. She said the next three weeks were critical for whether Tokyo would see an “overshoot”–an explosive rise–in virus cases. A day later, the Japanese Swimming Federation ...

The Japanese Swimming Federation now published the updated schedule of events resulting from the date shift of the competition set for the Tokyo Aquatics Centre.
