Christian Sadie came close to earning Team SA’s fifth medal of the World Para Swimming Championships on Thursday night in Madeira, Portugal, but had to settle for a fourth place finish in the men’s S7 50m butterfly. However both he and Kat Swanepoel – both of whom have won two medals this week – set more personal bests and records as their golden form continued. And Cornelle Leach, despite missing out on a place in her final, also established another African record.

Alani Ferreira was the first Team SA swimmer in the water at the 2022 World Para Swimming Championships in Madeira, Portugal, and she produced a personal best at her first attempt. Shortly afterwards, Kat Swanepoel shattered the South African and African record in the women’s SB3 50m breaststroke, finishing third in her heat in 1:00.98. That was nearly seven seconds faster than her qualifying entry time of 1:07.25, which was a remarkable improvement.
