Kayla Sanchez Michael Chadwick Kylie Masse who was announced as the team’s first swimmer on Wednesday Michael Chadwick after a 7-year hiatus from competitive swimming Kayla Sanchez was one of the breakout stars from year 1 of the ISL, ranking 13th overall in MVP scoring for the champion Energy Standard club.

Many of Canada’s top swimming stars are remaining hopeful and confident in the face of the news Friday that the global outbreak of COVID-19 has postponed Canadian Olympic Trials . Part of the message tweeted by Brent Hayden , the three-time Olympian who is making a comeback at age 36, is that, “Things unexpected happen. Yuri Kisil had been so close to making the 100 freestyle final two years in a row at the 2016 Olympics and 2017 Worlds. In Rio, he was 10th in the semi-finals, missing a spot in the final by five hundredths. A year later in Budapest, he was again 10th in the semis, missing a spot in the final by two tenths. Kisil, 24, was training with Tom Johnson at the High Performance Centre in Vancouver, and was seeing great results from his training on the west coast. But after being so close to the 100 free final two years in a row on the world stage, Kisil was getting in his own head.

Four-time Olympic medalist Penny Oleksiak was in action on Day 2 of the 2020 Winter Ontario Swimming Championships in Scarborough, racing only the prelims of the women’s 100 butterfly. Oleksiak, 19, finished in a time of 58.30 in the morning, marking her fastest swim since the 2018 Commonwealth Games. The 2016 Olympic 100 fly silver medalist, Oleksiak missed the Canadian World Championship team in this event last April when she placed third at the Trials in 58.61.

Two-time defending world champion Kylie Masse continued to show her patented consistency in the 100 backstroke on the opening night of finals at the Winter Ontario Swimming Champs in Scarborough, breaking the 1:00 barrier in both prelims and finals. Masse, the former world record holder in the event (58.10), clocked 59.94 in the heats to lower the 1:00.70 meet record held by Kayla Sanchez .

This year, she shifts her focus to what would be her second Olympic Games in Tokyo. The Olympic Trials are first, March 30-April 5, in Toronto, where she hopes to make the team in the same events she swam in Rio: the 100 fly and 100 free, and possibly the 200 free.
