Australian Swimming legend Ian Thorpe believes that his sensational 1:44.06 World record over 200 metres freestyle in 2001 remains one off the three most competitive four-length swims of the past two decades because “everyone in the world is swimming the 200 freestyle wrong.” “You can’t swim 150 meters easy and then turn it into a sprint. You are going to limit what time you are going to do,” says Thorpe, Olympic 400m freestyle champion at Sydney 2000 and 200m and 400m gold medallist at Athens 2004. Now 37, he believes that the only way the swimmer who cannot match the rare backend s ...

Gold Medalist to Capitol Insurrection: Tracing the Rise and Fall of Klete Keller There’s no sugarcoating the effect on the world of swimming that seeing Klete Keller’s among protestors storming the United States Capitol on Jan. 6 has had, just as there’s no diminishing the chilling effect of five lives lost that day or that the insurrection has had on American democracy. It’s made for a convenient hook in headlines of the coverage – of CEOs, elected officials and yes, an Olympic swimmer, joining an unruly mob of right-wing protestors trying to stop the certification of an election lo ...

Manchester Aquatics Centre – where Ian Thorpe went 3:40.08 over 400 free among a six-strong gold-medal haul at the 2002 Commonwealth Games – needs £31million ($42.3million) of investment in order to survive. The facility in Manchester in the north-west of England is home to the British Para-Swimming national performance center and has staged several national championships and the 2009 Duel in the Pool. It is well remembered as the place where Thorpe set the 400 world record which stood for seven years before being eclipsed by Paul Biedermann ‘s super-suited performance at the 2009 Wo ...

Ian Thorpe has visited MPs at Parliament House to lobby against the Government’s religious discrimination bill, saying it goes against the Australian notion of a “fair go” and will divide the country. The Olympian joined a campaign by Equality Australia to speak against the controversial proposed legislation, which has been through two iterations after broad criticism from both religious and LGBT groups . The bill, which the Government said aimed to protect the freedom to practice religion.

The NCAA’s Sports Science Institute issued memos to its members directing schools toward Centers for Disease Control (CDC) resources as early as late January, urging programs to take necessary precautions.
The contents of NCAA memos were revealed by USA Today amid concerns for safety and the prospect of any outbreak of the coronavirus – COVID 19 throwing the sports calendar into chaos. The NCAA is just about to enter its busiest time of the year.

Drew Kibler started his first NCAA championships by leading off the very first event of the meet. The Texas freshman and his Longhorn teammates went on to win the NCAA title in the 800 free relay and break the American record in the event. What an opening statement. But that is not where Kibler’s mind was. “It is hard to describe the feeling of leading off the 800 free relay as a freshman, going against seven seniors,” Drew Kibler told Swimming World . “Winning the relay was really good, but I couldn’t shake the feeling of not going as fast as I was hoping.

Upsets have always been a blast to watch no matter what sport they occur in. Watching leads erased and world records broken always makes for an exciting time, but if they’re done by a performer that no one expects, those races become legendary.
